I’ve been missing in action the past couple of weeks. I’d love to say that I’ve been traveling the world, but in reality, I’ve been preparing our tax documentation for our accountant (nerdy and not fun!) and doing other not-fun stuff around the house. While I was missing in action, someone else was as well. Do you remember that black stray female cat I mentioned in my second “Sookie Peed on the Floor” post? Well, I hadn’t seen that cat in weeks, and my parents, who are also my neighbors (long story), hadn’t seen the cat as well. Then, I got a call from my Mom this past Wednesday. That morning, my Dad found the cat in his big shed, starving to death.

We have no clue how long the cat had been in the shed. By Dad’s recollection, he had not opened that shed in at least a week. We’re assuming that while he had the shed doors open the little black cat wandered into the shed and then got locked in. We hope she managed to catch some mice and/or bugs. We are speculating she got some condensation water from the refrigerator. All of us are haunted by the thoughts of her starving and crying.

As soon as he found her, my Dad carried her to the back patio and gave her a can of wet food and a bowl of water. She devoured both. She was nothing but skin and bones after her ordeal, but her eyes shined, and her fur felt soft and sleek. Dad sat out there with her petting her and holding her. In the past, she refused to let you touch her. She’d hiss and swat. After her rescue, she became very affectionate and so far has remained that way.

Mom and Dad are keeping the cat on their screened-in porch. She is enjoying all the luxuries, including multiple cat beds, dry and wet food, water, a litter box, cat tree, and toys. They hope to find her a home so that she never has to live on the streets (or in our yards…or eek, our sheds!) again.

stray cat

My new phone makes GIFs. I accidentally took a motion picture, so I turned it into a GIF. Here’s the sweet stray cat.

If you have stray cats in your area or if you have indoor/outdoor cats, please check your sheds and garages. It’s very easy for a cat to slip into the space and hide. It’s a horrible thing to find a starving animal but even worse to find remains. We are fortunate that Dad found the stray cat when he did. The situation could have easily ended in tragedy rather than hope.
